The Survivors Trust is committed to protecting your privacy.

This Privacy Policy explains how we use the information we collect about you, how you can instruct us if you prefer to limit the use of that information and procedures that we have in place to safeguard your privacy.

You can visit the website without disclosing any personally identifiable information about yourself.

By using this website or submitting information to us through or in connection with this website, you signify your consent to our collection, use and disclosure of your personal information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

1. The information we collect 

Under normal circumstances, we will not use, store or otherwise process any personally identifiable information that relates to and identifies you. If however, you choose to contact The Survivors Trust, your email address will be stored to be used only for responding to your query. Your personal information will not be passed on to any third parties, such as member groups of The Survivors Trust, without your prior consent.

We also gather information for statistical purposes of monitoring website usage and may provide such aggregate information to third parties. These statistics will not include information that can be used in any way to identify you.

Your data may be available to our website provider to enable us and them to deliver their service to us, carry out analysis and research on demographics, interests and behaviour of our users and supporters to help us gain a better understanding of them to enable us to improve our services. This may include connecting data we receive from you on the website to data available from other sources. Your personally identifiable data will only be used where it is necessary for the analysis required, and where your interests for privacy are not deemed to outweigh their legitimate interests in developing new services for us. In the case of this activity the following will apply:

  1. Your data will be made available to our website provider
  2. The data that may be available to them include any of the data we collect as described in this policy.
  3. Our website provider will not transfer your data to any other third party, or transfer your data outside of the EEA. (see section 7. Information Security).
  4. They will store your data for a maximum of 7 years, unless otherwise required (see section 4. How long we keep information).
  5. This processing does not affect your rights as detailed in this privacy policy.
2. How we process information
Processing information with your consent

Through certain actions when otherwise there is no contractual relationship between us, such as when you browse our website or ask us to provide you more information about our business, including training or job opportunities, or information about our products and services, you provide your consent to us to process information that may be personal information.

Wherever possible, we aim to obtain your explicit consent to process this information, for example, by asking you to agree to our use of cookies.

Sometimes you might give your consent implicitly, such as when you send us a message by e-mail to which you would reasonably expect us to reply.

Except where you have consented to our use of your information for a specific purpose, we do not use your information in any way that would identify you personally. Processing information because we have a legal obligation

Processing information because we have a contractual obligation with you

When you contract a service from us, or agree to our terms and conditions, a contract is formed between you and us. Details will be included within any contractual arrangements and under that contract we may process your personal information. We may use your personal information to:

  • confirm your identity for security purposes
  • provide you with our services
  • provide you with suggestions and advice on services and information
  • use the information as part of the contractual process.
  • promote other services and products

We shall continue to process this information until the contract between us ends or is terminated by either party under the terms of the contract

Processing information for the purposes of legitimate interests

Occasionally there may be circumstances where we may process your information for legitimate interests to either you or us. In such cases we would carefully consider if this could be achieved through other means; whether this action (or inaction) might cause you or somebody else harm and whether you would expect us to process your data, and consider it reasonable to do so. For example, we may process your data on this basis for the purposes of:

  • administrative requirements for record-keeping purposes
  • responding to communication where a response would be reasonable expected
  • protecting the legal rights and interests of any party where we have a duty to do so
  • developing services
  • managing and mitigating organisational risks
3. Your consent

By submitting any personal information to us (including, without limitation, your membership application) you consent to the use of information as set out in this policy. We reserve the right to amend or modify this Privacy Policy and if we do so we will post the changes on this page. It is your responsibility to check the Privacy Policy every time you submit information to us. Use will signify that you agree to any such changes.

In the event the purposes for processing change, then we will contact you as soon as practicable and seek your consent where such notification relates to a new additional purpose for processing.

Your right to withdraw your consent

We continue to process your information on this basis until you withdraw your consent or it can be reasonably assumed that your consent no longer exists.

You may withdraw your consent at any time by instructing us via email to info@thesurvivorstrust.org marked as ‘GDPR Request’.

4. How long we keep information

Except as otherwise mentioned in this privacy notice, we keep your personal information only for as long as required by us:

  • to provide you with the services you have requested;
  • to comply with other law, including for the period demanded by our tax authorities;
  • to support a claim or defence in court.
5. How to access your information
Access to your personal information

You are entitled to confirmation that we hold personal data about you, obtain a copy of this, as well as review or update the personal information that we hold about you. To obtain a copy of any information you can send us a request at info@thesurvivorstrust.org marked as ‘subject access request’.

After receiving the request, we will respond within one calendar month from the first working day following receipt of the request.

Verification of your information

When we receive any request to access, edit or delete personal identifiable information we shall first take reasonable steps to verify your identity before granting you access or otherwise taking any action. This is important to safeguard your information.

Removal of your information

If you wish us to remove personal information about you which we hold you may end a request to info@thesurvivorstrust.org marked as ‘subject access request’. This may limit the service we can provide to you.

6. How you can complain

If you are not happy with our privacy policy or if have any complaint then you can email us directly via info@thesurvivorstrust.org  You can find further information about our complaint handling by requesting a copy of our complaints policy.

If you are in any way dissatisfied about how we process your personal information, you have a right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office. This can be done at https://ico.org.uk/concerns/

7. Information security
The Internet is not a secure medium. However, we have put in place various security measures as set out in this policy.

Please be aware that communications over the Internet, such as emails/webmails are not secure unless they have been encrypted. Your communications may route through a number of countries before being delivered – this is the nature of the World Wide Web/Internet. We cannot accept responsibility for any unauthorised access or loss of personal information that is beyond our control.

We believe that we have appropriate policies, rules and technical measures to protect the personal data that we have under our control (having regard to the type and amount of that data) from unauthorised access, improper use or disclosure, unauthorised modification, unlawful destruction or accidental loss.

All of our employees and data processors that have access to, and are associated with, the processing of your personal information are obliged to respect the confidentiality of our visitors’ information.

We ensure that your information will not be disclosed to government institutions or authorities except if required by law or when requested to by regulatory bodies or law enforcement organisations.

Data may be processed outside the European Union

Owing to the global nature of the Internet infrastructure, the information you provide may be transferred in transit to countries outside the European Economic Area that do not have similar protections in place regarding your data and its use as set out in this policy. However we have taken the steps outlined above to try and protect the security of your information.

8. Cookies
