If you’re a journalist reporting on sexual violence, please read the Independent Press Standards Organisation’s (IPSO) Guidance on Reporting of Sexual Offences. It explains protections for victims and outlines safe, sensitive practices. 

The Editors’ Code doesn’t set out language, but reporting on sexual offences requires care. Avoid terms that sensationalise, imply consent, or assign blame. Victims/survivors are often vulnerable. Choose your words responsibly. 

When you interview a victim, consider the impact on them and their wellbeing. Offer choices like interview location and signpost to appropriate support and helplines.
