Understanding the Disclosure of Sibling Sexual Abuse

This research explores how young people (aged 16–25) who have experienced sibling sexual behaviour–abuse (SSB‑A) describe the process of disclosure, the barriers and facilitators, and what might have supported earlier identification or safer responses.

This research aims to improve how individuals and services recognise and respond to disclosures of sibling sexual abuse. By centring the voices of young people and parents, it will generate evidence on what helps or hinders safe disclosure, and what support is needed at different stages.

For survivors, the research will:

  • Highlight what makes disclosure safer, more supportive, and less harmful,
  • Identify gaps in responses that can retraumatise or silence individuals,
  • Inform more trauma‑informed, developmentally appropriate support.

Below we share the recruitment poster as well as an information poster with all details about the research. If you have any questions, or to participate, please email the researcher directly at j.beagley@sussex.ac.uk.
