Webinar: We discussed the child protection authority and the current consultation

This webinar has taken place on 11th February.

The Child Protection Authority (CPA) was one of the key recommendations of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA). The IICSA recommendation stated that the intention of the CPA was to:

  • Improve child protection practice nationwide
  • Advise government on policy and reform
  • Inspect institutions and settings where safeguarding risks may arise

An effective CPA would bridge the long‑standing gaps between multiple government departments that currently share responsibility for child protection, representing the first unified national approach since the Children’s Act 1989. It also marks a vital step towards tackling the staggering number of 500,000 children who experience sexual abuse each year in the UK.

With the CPA’s scope and remit now out for consultation until 5 March, we invite you to join an online webinar to explore what an effective CPA should look like and how you can meaningfully contribute to the consultation.

We’ll be joined by the senior IICSA team who developed the evidence behind the recommendation, as well as a representative from the team leading the set‑up of the CPA at the Department for Education.

Our expert panel includes:

  • Professor Alexis Jay CBE – Former Chair of IICSA
  • John O’Brien CBE – Former Secretary to IICSA
  • David Greenwood – Head of Switalski Solicitors and legal representative for over 1,000 IICSA core participants
  • Fay Maxted OBE – CEO of The Survivors Trust and former IICSA consultant
  • Lucy Duckworth – Policy Lead at The Survivors Trust, IICSA consultant, Secretary to the ACT on IICSA campaign group

Together, the panel will unpack the evidence, discuss what an effective CPA should look like, and guide you through completing the consultation.
